October brings cider and donuts, colder weather and corn mazes to the Detroit Metro area. It also brings plenty of shows and concerts. And don't forget the ultimate celebration of the season, Halloween. To help you schedule your fall activities, here is a list of Metro Detroit Events and Things to Do in October, 2008.

The Detroit Metro Area embraces the Halloween season in a variety of ways. In addition to house decorations, trick-or-treat events, costume parties and special shows, Detroit is arguably the haunted house capital of the United States. Whether you're looking for a frightening experience, costume party, local ghost story or Halloween store, the 2008 Detroit Halloween Guide will help you celebrate the holiday.

Pressed cider, apples and piping-hot donuts herald the fall season in Michigan. Sure, you can stop by your local supermarket, but there is something addicting about hanging out at a picnic bench by a big red barn in the cool air of autumn. The Detroit Metro Area has several cider mills from which to choose.

Detroit Fashion Week

When: 9/29/08 through 10/4/08
Where: Campus Martius, Downtown Detroit

Detroit’s got nothing on New York. Our fashion week begins on September 29th. It includes a designer runway showcase tent and exclusive premiere runway collections, as well as charity events and parties. Tim Gunn would approve.

10th Annual Motor City Blues & Boogie Woogie Festival

When: 10/3/08 through 10/4/08
Where: Detroit, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts

This festival is about more than a good time; it is about preserving the performance of blues, boogie woogie and jazz music for historical and educational purposes. While attendees with be graced with the live music of such notable performers as Allen Toussaint, Bobby Rush and Otis Clay, performances will be kept for prosperity and public programming in the form of video.

Annual Great Lakes Regional Chili Cook-off and Harley Davidson Motorcycle Show

When: 10/5/08
Where: Plymouth, Kellogg Park

Black leather and all things chili seem an unlikely mix for the quaint city of Plymouth -- but it works. Taste testing every variety of chili imaginable is a cool way to spend an autumn day. After trying all the various concoctions, provided by local restaurants and residents alike, you can start planning for your wild retirement by exploring all the polished and spruced-up motorcycles set out along the city streets.

Oktoberfest

Where: Northville, Community Park

Apparently, the beer tent was a hit at Northville's Victorian Festival in September because the city is bringing it back this month for Northville's 3rd Annual Oktoberfest. In addition to the beer tent, the event will have Bavarian dancers, kielbasa, musicians, a petting farm, inflatable rides and wagon rides.

2008 Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon

Where: Downtown Detroit

The marathon route this year crosses into Canada twice and is peppered with musical entertainment -- it is Motown after all. Can't handle running 26 miles? There is still an event for you, including a half marathon, kids walk and relay. For those more interested in pledging financial support rather than expending calories, the organizers provide other entertainment, including an expo with over 100 exhibitors.

At any given time, Detroit hosts a variety of shows and concerts, including music concerts, Broadway plays, comedians, rodeos and circuses.

The Tigers have some great talent this year and a great ballpark.

Arts Alive!: After six and one-half years of renovations, the new Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) opens its doors to show off its new design and galleries. The DIA is always brimming with events, including films, exhibits and music.

Beaches and Parks for Fall Picnics

When: Throughout the summer
Where: Parks throughout the Metro Detroit area
